Bark Control Collar
Although a bark control collar is an efficient and easy way to train your dog not to bark
excessively, it must be used sparingly. Remember that the dog is a pet, not a nuisance. Being sensitive to the
reasons a dog barks will help the owner understand when to inflict a disciplinary method and when to be alerted
that his pet is trying to convey a message.
The Dog Left Outdoors
Depending on the breed of dog, indoor space, and how far along the pet is in his house training,
many dogs are left outside. Although it minimizes furniture damage, it also exposes the dog to overwhelming
stimuli. With all the visual, auditory, and tactile stimuli, the dog cannot help but bark frequently. The fact that
he is placed outside means that the neighbors may get irritated or bothered by the noise that it makes. Plus there
is the added risk of him getting into the neighbors’ lawns or residences and creating a bit of chaos. To avoid such
problems, a bark control collar is often used.
The bark control collar is only meant as a temporary training method and when the owner is able,
he should dedicate time and effort in housetraining the dog. That way, the pet can be kept indoors where barking
would not be as loudly heard by neighbors. Also, if he is given a good supply of chew toys and food, this will keep
him busily munching and he will not have reason to bark too much. The owner just has to make sure that the pet is
kept within boundaries and that breakable or fragile furniture have to be kept away from his proximity.
The Attention-starved Dog
If a dog uses barking as a way to get attention, a bark control collar can minimize this, but
will not solve the original problem. What the owner has to do is to persuade the dog that barking will not get his
attention, whereas keeping quiet will. He can do this by standing near to the dog but not paying him any attention
when he is barking. Then, when he stops, the owner should move closer and pet or treat the dog. The dog will soon
make the connection that he is rewarded when he is quiet and therefore, it must be the right behavior.
The Lonely Dog
Perhaps the dog is left alone the whole day while the owners are at work or school. It is
difficult for the pet to come to terms with this especially in the early stages. Dogs are social animals and
constantly search for some form of interaction.
It is important not to spoil a dog or any other pet. If the owners spend all their time with
their pet while he is still new, he will become used to the attention and will have a hard time tolerating their
absence when it is required. This makes the dog bark excessively when they are gone.
One way to keep the dog quiet and not alarm the neighbors is to use a bark control collar.
However, in the process, the owner must also desensitize the dog for his long absences by making sure that even
when he is home, he does not spoil the dog with too much attention. Like all trainable animals, dogs will
eventually learn to enjoy their time alone. Giving him a chew toy or something to play with can also divert his
attention from the loneliness.
These are the usual situations wherein a dog is compelled to bark. The bottom line is, using a
bark control collar is a quick and effective way to keep the dog from barking, but it should also be a temporary
intervention. In the long run, it is healthier for everybody to get to the root of the problem.
